Bioclimatic Single Family House Akrotiri, Chania

It is a plot of land of 500 sq.m. located within the settlement of Kounoupidiana in Akrotiri Chania. It is bordered by neighboring plots and by a private road connected to a 10m wide municipal road. The terrain on a slope and the location of the plot is privileged, as due to its slope offers an unobstructed sea view. The entrance to the plot is to its west side. The aim of the architectural study was to design a residence which could accommodate a family of four and their guests. Central idea of study was the development of the building on its east-west axis, in order for all the residence’s areas to have bright lighting and ventilation, in accordance with the principles of bioclimatic architecture.
The designed building of 200 sq.m. surface, consists of three levels (basement, ground floor, floor). A dominant feature is the placement of the staircase in the center of the floor plan. In this way, the building is divided into individual spaces and uses, east and west. Specifically, the basement includes the parking space and to the east, a guest house. The ground floor includes the family’s bedrooms. Two bedrooms to the west with a shared bathroom and the large bedroom with a private bathroom to the east. The floor includes the common areas of the residence, i.e. a single living room-dining room, a kitchen with pantry and a guest WC. On the south side of the plot, with direct access through the bedrooms, an outdoor area protected from the prevailing winds. The colorings are differentiated, so that the distribution of spaces is noticeable.
